2019 Round 22 Captain’s Conundrum

MLS is back after the All-Star game festivities and with it comes a wave of uncertainty. There will be questions about whether the additional midweek game and travel will affect performances this week but these players according to me, solidify their position at the top for game week 22.

1) Carlos Vela

The captain of the ASG, Vela failed to make an impression in a disappointing loss against Atletico Madrid. This week’s opponents New England Revolution have conceded only 1 goal in the last 3 games but it doesn’t worry me much because it was against the teams at the bottom. Vela should be back to his old ways this week and finds himself at the top of this list again.

2) Josef Martinez

Josef only played about 30 minutes in the ASG and is back at home turf against LA Galaxy. It’s a perfect setup for Josef to have a big game with both Zlatan Ibrahimović and Diego Polenta missing out due to suspension. He is already in a crazy run where he has scored in his last 8 games and has a total of 12 goals in the last 8 games. For me, Josef is as good as Vela this week but it’s difficult to predict who will score more points, i.e., outscore Vela.

3) Nicolás Lodeiro

Lodeiro will have a big task at hand against SKC this week with supporting cast from the B team to support him. A few key absentees might be Ruidiaz, Rodriguez, Svensson, Smith and possibly Leerdam due to injuries. It will be a tough game because SKC will try to get 3 points and get out of the bottom but Lodeiro should have a decent game like he usually does at home. He would’ve been higher up the list if it wasn’t for all the injuries around him.

4) Carles Gil

Gil is in crazy form right now notching double-digit points in his last 3 games. He has 4 goals and 4 assists in his last 5 games. It’s a tough matchup on paper against one of the best defenses in the league but LAFC have conceded 6 goals in the last 2 games and the revs have built some great momentum for themselves recently. They’re unbeaten since May and have dominated in their last 3 games even though they were against lower placed teams. Both the Revs and LAFC have one of the best attacks in the league currently and will be looking for 3 points to solidify their positions.

5) Valeri “Vako” Qazaishvili

Vako added another goal to his name last week and his tally is up to 3 goals and 1 assist in the last three games. San Jose is on a fantastic run and sits comfortably at 4th whereas opponents Columbus Crew are still trying to get out of the bottom and haven’t kept a clean sheet since the game against New England Revolution in April. There will be goals in this game for sure but will Vako continue his hot form?
