MLS Fantasy Round 17 Review (Part 2)

MLS Fantasy Review Round 14

Houston Dynamo 0 vs. FC Dallas 2

Highlights

The rain delay didn’t slow either attack as the Dynamo put up 7 shots in the first half and FC Dallas was putting on the pressure. It was the FC Dallas attack that put on the most pressure through the quick feet of Fabian Castillo. Despite the match being relatively even, Fabian Castillo was the difference scoring one and forcing the own goal by Jermaine Taylor. This is the second victory for Dallas in the Texas derby and it looks like they may take the 3rd one as well with their play.

Fantasy Standouts

  • Fabian Castillo ($10.3): Castillo started the season off strong, but has been ghosting by the rest of the season. That wasn’t the case this weekend and anyone who has watched an FC Dallas game knows the amazing pace this man brings as well as the ability he has to absolutely turn a game on its head and single handedly win games.

Fantasy Letdowns

  • Houston Dynamo Defense: With the offense sputter the defense doesn’t seem deserve any looks.
  • Will Bruin ($8.4): Turned heads a couple weeks ago, but the Dynamo attack hasn’t been clicking and the service hasn’t been coming, which is a problem for his fantasy production.

Toronto FC 0 vs. DC United 0

Highlights

A scrappy game that was covered in rain half the time saw neither side able to put one in the back of the net. Altidore and Giovinco were unable to spark the attack like midweek, but the Toronto FC defense exposed the flaws in the DC United offense. Young guys like Zavaleta showed their quality (fantasy wise), while DC United also put up a quality showing, with Birnbaum’s return to the side being a clearly needed development.

Fantasy Standouts

  • Eriq Zavaleta ($5.6): only owned by 1.2% of fantasy owners, the kid needs a look and comes highly recommended by his coaching staff and me.
  • Steve Birnbaum ($7.8): He is in a fine run of form with 5, 8, and 7 in his last 3 games and those last 2 meant a DGW score of 15. He looks to be back to his old self and is well worth the price if you’re willing to splurge on defense with all the low budget options around.

Fantasy Letdowns

  • Sebastian Giovinco ($12.3): Giovinco has a great game midweek, but sputtered this weekend along with the rest of the attack. He’s not a must have given the departures of Bradley and Altidore as well as his incredibly high price tag, but if you have him you should keep him.
  • DC United Offense: Whose gonna score and when? Without regular production from Espindola it’s hard to tell and we didn’t see any consistency over this DGW.

Philadelphia Union 2 vs. Montreal Impact 2

Highlights

The Impact found their scoring boots through the regulars McInerney and Piatti, however the Impact defense couldn’t keep the struggling Union offense out of the goal. Edu was able to put one past and then it took energetic and exciting Ayuk’s sub appearance to tie it up for the Union. Neither defenses looked convincing while Laurent Ciman was unable to anchor down the young outside backs.

Fantasy Standouts

  • Ignacio Piatti ($9.9): A lot of people were high on Piatti for this DGW and were solely disappointed when he came up short midweek. Luckily he was able to pull one back in this game and looks to still be the heart of the Impact attack so don’t worry.

Fantasy Letdowns

  • Montreal Impact Defense: the cheap outside backs and the rocksteady Ciman have been fan favorites as of late and they didn’t exactly earn huge plaudits for their defensive ability in this game.
  • Philadelphia Union: Attack not convincing and neither is the defense. Apart from Sapong the only exciting player is Ayuk who spends the majority of games on the bench.

New England Revolution 1  vs. Vancouver Whitecaps 2

Highlights

The Revs struggles continued as the Whitecaps bounced back from poor recent form. Rivero finally found his scoring boots again and relatively new player Techera joined him. Teal Bunbury was able to salvage something for the Revs with a consolation goal after the Revs struggled with only 10 men from a 29th minute red card to Andrew Farrell. While Lee Nguyen looked to regain form midweek the Revs offense was once again halted and scant for ideas.

Fantasy Standouts

  • Octavio Rivero ($9.2): Owned by 23.5% people surprisingly he has deserved it as of late with a respectable score of 7, 6, and 7 in the last couple weeks. If you want to be different this isn’t the guy for you, but if you’re wondering why you’ve been falling behind you may need to give him a look.

Fantasy Letdowns

  • New England Revolution Offense: The offense has too many talents and Jay Heaps has been rotating a lot that it’s never really been easy to tell whose going to perform. You really need to be feeling lucky right now to bet on an individual Revs player.
  • There wasn’t much in this week with an awfully poor performance by the Revs and not much to prove any worth for the Whitecaps defense. Should be given more time to pick up.

Sporting Kansas City 2 vs. Colorado Rapids 0

Highlights

Neither offense exactly performed offensively in this game, but Sporing Kansas City came away with 2 goals and not much to worry about, while the Rapids now appear to being spiraling out of control. Nemeth has been a good addition this year for SKC and has picked up the slack with lower production from Dwyer. Rapids…… oh Rapids, not much to like here. The defense looked good at the beginning of the year, but it doesn’t appear that they have much to be happy about with recent performances.

Fantasy Standouts

  • Benny Feilhaber ($10.3): Benny has been the cornerstone of SKC’s offense and if not for him it’s questionable whether SKC would be in panic mode or not. Especially with the lack of consistent production from Nemeth and Dwyer the mainstay in SKC has been Feilhaber.

Fantasy Letdowns

  • Dom Dwyer ($10.7): Dom just can’t seem to find consistency and his 2014 form. Not worth the price tag right now until he finds his form.
