2019 Round 13 Captain’s Conundrum

Round 13 is here to cause confusion this week in terms of captain choice because there is no clear-cut captain choice. Double games for New York Red Bulls and Vancouver Whitecaps doesn’t really provide us with the best captain choice because both teams haven’t been anything special offensively or defensively.

Vela captain

1) Carlos Vela

A must have pick every time he plays at home, Vela continued his fine form with 2 goals and an assist in the double game week last week. He has now scored double digit points in 3 consecutive games and it won’t be very difficult for him to make it 4 double digit points in a row in the game against Montreal Impact at home. Vela should march his way through this game unless the Impact decide to bunker and get a point.

Amro Tarek captain

2) Amro Tarek

Tarek might surprisingly be one of the most popular captain choices this week and the only reason is that there aren’t many other double game week captain choices this week, especially with a lot of questions being raised about which players will start in both the games. He is one of the potential candidates to go 180 minutes this week. The red bulls had the best defense in the league last season but they don’t inspire any confidence anymore. They’ve kept only 2 clean sheets so far this season in 12 games and against FC Cincinnati and Atlanta United. The only reason they’re considered good picks this week is because they play the two worst attacks in the league this week: Vancouver Whitecaps (12 goals scored) and FC Cincinnati (11 goals scored). Tarek isn’t a good fit for the armband if you don’t expect the him to keep a clean sheet in atleast one game this week.

Marc Rza captain

3) Marc Rzatkowski

Marc Rzatkowski is a relatively safe captain choice this week with a decent floor unless the Red Bulls decide to field their B team against FC Cincinnati. He has scores of 9,9 and 5 which is a indication that he is in good form. He might sit in one of the games this week if Armas decides to rotate him and Casseres Jr might replace him. I must also mention that no Red Bulls player is guaranteed to be safe from rotation as Chris Armas tends to switch things up a bit like he did against FC Dallas.

Daniel Royer captain

4) Daniel Royer

Daniel Royer has been the best offensive player for the Red Bulls this season with 2 goals and 4 assists so far. He has two good matchups against Vancouver Whitecaps who’ve conceded in 4 consecutive away games and FC Cincinnati who conceded 5 goals last week against Orlando and haven’t kept a cleansheet in 9 games. The only issue is that Daniel Royer is another candidate for rotation by Chris Armas. All we can hope for is that the birthday boy has a gift for us on his birthday.

5) Nani

Nani was on fire last week against FC Cincinnati and missed out on a hattrick because of a penalty miss. I expect Nani to still retain his penalty duties this week as he goes up against LA Galaxy. The Galaxy have conceded 6 goals in the past 2 away games and will remain without star forward and captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic this week due to suspension. He was fantastic before his injury and he is picking up form again. Nani is a differential captain pick but selecting him as captain is almost betting on him being involved in goals because he is very goal/assist reliant for his points.
