2019 Round 19 Captain’s Conundrum

Round 19’s captain rankings are here. Carlos Vela fails to make the list because heavy rotation is expected by LAFC and he might not make the starting XI against Houston Dynamo. So who dethrones him at the top of the list?

1) Diego Valeri

Valeri played only about 25 minutes in the Open Cup against LAFC on Wednesday and is good to go against Colorado Rapids at home. He hasn’t been in the best form recently but is expected to carry most of the attack this week after both Sebastian Blanco and Brian Fernandez played the entire match in the US Open Cup game. Opponents Colorado Rapids are still trying to find their feet away from home.

2) Nico Gaitan

Gaitan is coming off a monster week where he scored a goal and 3 assists against Atlanta United. He feeds off the weaker teams and almost all of his goals and assists have come at home. Opponents FC Cincinnati have the worst defense in the league and have conceded 26 goals in the last 7 games but are expected to improve defensively after the return of defender Kendall Watson. Gaitan has the highest potential in this list and should have a great game if he keeps up his form.

3) Nicolas Lodeiro

Lodeiro returned from international duty and immediately made an impact with 2 goals Vs Columbus Crew. This week’s opponents Atlanta United had the best defense in the league for a while but have really struggled recently conceding 13 goals in the last 4 games. It’s a great opportunity for Lodeiro who is very consistent at home and possibly no Victor Rodriguez to cut into his production because of an injury in training.

4) Alberth Elis

Elis is another player making an instant impact after returning from International duty and netted 2 goals and 1 assist last week against the New York Red Bulls. LAFC is expected to field their B team against Houston Dynamo this week and the only starter confirmed to start is Tyler Miller. Alberth Elis is an entirely different player at home and this could finally be the game that changes the momentum for the Dynamo and helps them push themselves higher up the table.

5) Zlatan Ibrahimović

Zlatan goes up against the San Jose Earthquakes this week who’ve been brilliant defensively and have conceded only 3 goals in the last 4 games. It’s still almost impossible to count Zlatan out because he always finds a way to score goals. He could either get you a 2 or a 12 so it’s a high risk-high reward option.
