Introduction
Welcome back to diffeRANCHals season 5! I can’t believe we already are at 5 consecutive seasons of doing an article about differentials. I wouldn’t have been able to continue for this long without the support of all of the readers along with the contributors who have stepped up to help out. This season is going to be a little bit different compared to previous season due to the divide among locations of where people are playing the fantasy MLS games. For this reason, Meg and I will be focusing on differentials with Kickbase while Matt is focusing on FUTD and xChandyo will be joining the team to write about Sofascore. We’re so excited for this season and hopefully all of you are too. Let’s get into it!
Ranch & Meg’s KB Differentials
Week Results:
Ranch: DeJuan Jones, $13.5m (Defender – San Jose)
After many seasons of not considering DeJuan Jones much a differential, he definitely will be one this season while playing with the Quakes. For opening weekend, San Jose is hosting a Sporting KC side that only has 20 players on their active roster currently… and 4 of those are goal keepers! Does that mean a sure-fire clean sheet? Of course not. Especially when San Jose isn’t looking like a great team either. However, what does inspire confidence is how often Jones gets up the field when he plays. In the new Kickbase system, I’m hoping that Jones can make enough of an impact to reflect a good amount of points this week.
Meg: Justin Haak, $17.1m (Defender –LA Galaxy)
Opening weekend playing his former team and it is happening at home? Sign me up! Haak is known for making things happen. He tends to always drift forward and helps push the ball into the attack not to mention helps defensively with clearances, with this new scoring system I think he will generate points in a variety of categories and with a matchup such as this…makes him worth the look.
Meg: Niko Tsakiris, $6.3m (Midfielder SJ Earthquakes)
Home season kick off against an incredibly depleted SKC team. He’s playing the 10 and shouldn’t have to worry about being rotated for the likes of other players. I like his chances of scoring a lot this weekend and that paired with him needing to prove that he is the guy and he can get things done should drive him to be productive.
Ranch: Maxi Moralez, $19.2m (Midfielder – NYCFC)
As old as his legs are, MaxiMo has been a consistent player for NYCFC and this year isn’t any different. Maxi has always been a high-level midfielder. As NYCFC travels to LA to play the Galaxy this weekend, he can be someone to keep an eye on as a potential way to differentiate yourself from the chalk. Maxi is the captain and on both free kicks and corner kicks. With that knowledge in mind, it is only beneficial and could contribute to many points within the Kickbase system!
Ranch: Idan Toklomati, $23.4m (Forward – Charlotte)
If you want to get in on a player who already has experience and playing against a team who just changed essentially their entire backline, Toklomati is your guy. With Charlotte traveling to St. Louis this weekend, Toklomati and company have a chance to really set an early impression as to what they are capable of this season. Am I hopeful in general because I drafted him in my draft league? Of course! Do I still think he is a good pick? Yes!
Meg: Klauss, $22.3m (Forward – LA Galaxy)
NYC defense isn’t always the most solid on the road and Klauss is on a new team ready to prove that he is the guy for the goal(s). Sure, Pec is still there to make defenders second guess what’s happening, which should allow Klauss to deliver some shots on goal. I also am hopeful for good things to come this season because I drafted him in our draft league as well and I need some solid production. Lets hope Klauss helps this girl out. =]
Matt’s FUTD Differentials
Miss out on your bidding targets or have some roster spots to fill? Here are some high ceiling cheap alternatives for you to look at.
Week Results:
Matt: Fallou Fall, $2.6m (Defender – STL)
If you are tight for budget and need a warm body on your back line or are looking to gain some value, Fallou Fall should be one of the starting CBs for St. Louis and is only listed at 2.6. That is some easy value gain and a potentially sneaky set piece threat.
Matt: Theo Corbeanu, $3.5m (Midfielder – Toronto)
If this Toronto front line starts clicking, Corbeanu could be a sneaky way into it. Most people probably saw Mihailovic and potentially a cheap Osorio and wanted to grab them, but Corbeanu proved to be a solid playmaker and shooter for Toronto last season. If he gets consistent minutes and Toronto are scoring goals, his market value will only go up.
Matt: Ayoub Jabbari, $4m (Forward – Cincinnati)
Jabbari might not be someone that hits right away, but getting someone in now for $4m who will be linking up with Denkey and Evander is hard to pass up. He might have been more popular after his two goal substitute performance midweek in CCC, though.
Chandyo’s SofaScore Differentials
Week Results:
Chandyo: Oscar Verhoeven, 5.0M (Defender – San Diego)
This one is really all about the price and the Matchup. Montreal didn’t do much this off-season IMO, They were not great a season ago either. SD is at home. Now there is a chance that Verhoeven doesn’t start but you should still have time to pivot if not to either Pilcher (Same Price), or Eisner (cheaper $4.0) – I’ve seen a couple of different Projected Lineups that have them starting over Verhoeven.
Chandyo: Joquin Valiente, $6.0m (Midfielder – FC Dallas)
He’s new to FC Dallas, but will start in a position that could be a number 10? Dallas is at home and welcome in Toronto. Toronto doesn’t have Sean Johnson anymore, although Garvan does have MLS time, I feel this Defense can be scored on and I could see Valiente feeding Musa.
Chandyo: Cade Cowell, $5.0m (Forward – New York Red Bulls)
Cade returns to the MLS. He was really good for SJ back in his 1st stint with MLS. Now the Red Bulls are on the road in Orlando week 1. That said ORL has some changes on their back line. ECM had some production last season so I could see Cade contributing to that or even seein the back of the net himself.
