Round 1 is always tough when you are picking a captain, there is just not enough information to go on. But there are a few things that help. Is the team playing at home? Are there any key injuries (on either team)? Who had a good Preseason? Did Andrew Wiebe see his shadow this morning? All of these things help. Here are my top 3 choices:

1) Will Bruin: It seems like I’m going along with the crowd, but there is a good reasons everyone is looking at him. Bruin is going into this game with a lot of confidence (and that means a lot for forwards) and Montreal’s defense should provide him plenty of opportunities to score. To clarify, I do not think he is such a great choice that you should transfer him in. Houston does have a bye in Round 3 so you don’t want to be caught shot handed.

2) Clint Dempsey: Dempsey was able to get the assist for the crucial end of game goal to allow Seattle to bead SKC last week. The sounders had problems getting their offense together in that game but I think he’ll help turn things around. I expect Dempsey to start this game and may even get a full 90.

3) Norberto Paparatto: I’m not as high on defenders as I was last week, but I still think the right one can pay off. With Mike Magee having injury concerns, Portland looks to be one of the most likely to get a clean sheet in Round 2. With Kah injured, Paparatto is my top pick from this unit because of the 19 CBIs he racked up last week.

4) Pedro Morales: After a big game last week, and a high likelihood of starting this week, Morales could be a great differential captain. He’s owned by only 7% of managers and is playing against a Chivas defense that allowed Chicago to score 2 last week. It’s still a risk, he’s new to MLS and Vancouver, so it’s hard to even guess good he will be.
