MLS Fantasy Review Round 16 (Part 1)

MLS Fantasy Review Round 14

Colorado Rapids 1 vs. FC Dallas 1

Highlights

Despite the loss and amidst the seemingly continuous offensive struggles of the Rapids throughout the year, this result was actually a positive. They controlled almost 60% of possession and outshot an offensively dangerous Dallas side. On the other end of the field we had a Dallas lineup that appeared to be back at full strength after missing some players to international duty, but a side that couldn’t hold on to their 1-0 lead and conceded late. However, it’s good news for Dallas fans that Castillo was on the scoresheet. Hopefully that’s indicative of big things to come from the speedy playmaker.

Fantasy Standouts

  • Fabian Castillo ($10.3): Castillo started the season off strong, but has been ghosting by the rest of the season. That was the case this weekend and anyone who has watched an FC Dallas game knows the amazing pace this man brings as well as the ability he has to absolutely turn a game on its head and single handedly win games. With that also comes his ability to miss by inches 5 times in a game and end with 2 points. I’d put him on my team, however the entire FC Dallas team is marred by its lack of DGWs.
  • Dillon Serna ($6.6): Serna looks to be a sneaky pic coming up at 1.2% ownership. The homegrown kid has talent and he showed it in bunches this weekend earning praise from Mastroeni and his teammates. He took 4 shots and 5 corner kicks. He might just make it into my starting lineup this week if not the next.

Fantasy Letdowns

  • Blas Perez ($9.9): Usually the goal scoring threat for Dallas, he’s been absent as of late and continued that trend this weekend. No DGW next week and not worth a look until after.
  • Dillon Powers ($7.8): Picked up hype early in the fantasy season for being the Rapids playmaker, but after his missed PK he slumped hard. Not only that, but the arrival of Doyle and Solignac as well as the emergence of Serna as an offensive presence has severely hurt his production.

Seattle Sounders 0 vs. San Jose Earthquakes 2

Highlights

Well this one was tough to watch. Not because it was a bad game, but because I’m a huge Sounders fan. The Sounders has a lineup missing Dempsey, Obafemi Martins, Gonzalo Pineda and Osvaldo Alonso. That’s 3 DPs and a veteran starter from the center mid field. The Sounders controlled almost 60% of possession with a lineup consisting of teens and freshly arrived youth from Brazil. They also put more shots on goal and one of the two goals came completely against the run of play and out of a bit of inexperience. This is basically me saying I’m not worried about the Sounders without Dempsey or Martins for the short term. Stay the course and come watch the young guns get their chances. As for San Jose. MPG has arrived and showed why the Earthquakes were so keen on him. He’s the man right now in SJ.

Fantasy Standouts

  • Matias Perez Garcia ($8.5): MPG had an absolute game this weekend assisting on Nyassi’s absolute rip on goal and dancing through the Sounders defense to slot home a silky goal. He’s my pick for those of you trying to get a reliable producer.

Fantasy Letdowns

  • Lamar Neagle ($8.8): If you were like me you reasonably thought Lamar would take on the onus of scoring goals. That didn’t happen. I honestly can’t say if I think he’ll be the man this upcoming DGW. You’ll have to stay tuned to the chat and the Reddit community to help you decide because that’s what I’ll be doing this week.
  • Sounders Defense: I mean they lost 2-0. No one had a positive performance. A favorable schedule awaits them in the DGW so I’m confident they’ll it around, but I wouldn’t fault you for jumping ship.

New York Red Bulls 1 vs. Vancouver Whitecaps 2

Highlights

This basically describes the game. Ousted went beast mode and BWP had probably one of the worst blows to your confidence you can possibly have. Oh and Kljestan got a red card. I’m not even sure if BWP is taking PKs after this game. While Ousted did essentially win the Whitecaps the game, the defense still conceded, the offense barely had more possession than the Red Bulls and they managed just 3 shots on goal despite being up a man.

Fantasy Standouts

  • David Ousted ($5.7): 14 points for a keeper during a SGW warrants a shoutout no matter how they got it. 2 PK saves, 1 point from saves, 1 defensive BP and minutes played. Not saying pick him, just want to make sure you knew this happened.

Fantasy Letdowns

  • The Whitecaps offense really wasn’t all that dynamic without Morales and the Red Bulls wasn’t any better. On the flipside the defenses for either team were poor throughout the game. Miazga should look to come back in for the Red Bulls and tighten it up, but I don’t have a positive outlook for either of these teams in the near future, regardless of the result we saw.

New York City FC 2  vs. Toronto FC 0

Highlights

Giovinco getting manhandled is a pretty accurate portrayal of the way this game went. Basically Toronto dominated this possession in chances, possession and overall service, but had nothing to show for it. New York City continued their fine run of form and David Villa can finally stop being ashamed of his sub par performances early on in the season as he has been superb the pas couple games. I have faith in Toronto going forward especially with the return of Altidore.

Fantasy Standouts

  • David Villa ($10.8): He had a brace and it was his second straight week with 12 points. If you have him don’t drop him. They’ll be facing a Red Bulls team missing Kljestan and potentially Sam as well as a BWP that just missed two PKs and may not be mentally ready for this game.

Fantasy Letdowns

  • Sebastian Giovinco ($12.1): If you’re one of the 17.6% people who own Giovinco, you’re owning him because you hope he’ll pay out in the DGW. This means you’re probably not going to drop him and you shouldn’t. He was a massive letdown this weekend, but I will go as far to guarantee he scores a goal this weekend.
