“Thank goodness MLS continues to schedule league matches during international breaks and tournaments!” – Said no MLS fantasy manager, ever
That rather sardonic quote pretty much sums up MLS Fantasy Round 16, where we got to navigate international player absences from 10 clubs over just five matches. Next up is Round 17, which compounds that same challenge over a relatively full slate of matches, starting with a rare Thursday match, and the possibility of returning international players who may or may not be available depending on travel, fatigue and other factors.
All but three clubs playing in Round 17 have either definite or potential absences due to the current international break and the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, so it’s important to check the starting XI for each club as soon as they are announced on matchday. Also note that four clubs are on a bye for the round, Los Angeles FC, Inter Miami CF and Seattle Sounders FC due to their participation in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, and Toronto FC, who were originally scheduled to play LAFC on Friday.
To help you assess strengths and weaknesses for each matchup, I’ve thrown together a handy list of international players who are either definitely or possibly unavailable for Round 17. Players listed in bold won’t be in their club’s matchday squad, but players listed in italics could return in time and be fit enough to start or make an appearance.
Note:(?) means the player might not start due to injury, lack of fitness, availability status or loss of starting spot. (OOP) means the player is expected to play out of position.
