Round 27 in the MLS gets underway tonight, So I have taken a look at the best options to make your Fantasy captain this week. Picking the right captain this week , could see you claw back points on the leaders of your league , or even extend the gap at the top. Here’s my top four picks for this week.
Sebastian Giovinco / Toronto / $12.5 Million / vs Portland (A), LAFC (H)
Sebastian Giovinco has rediscovered that MVP form from 2015 in. Two goals last week against Montreal saw him into double figures for the season. The forward has been averaging a goal every game in his last six games. However the Italian had been out of form in front of goal earlier in the summer , when he only managed to net once in seven games between round 15 and 20.
This round is a double game week for Toronto, who have to travel to Portland tonight. Toronto will look at this match up as a good time to play the Timbers . Portland have lost four on the bounce taking L’s against DC, Vancouver SKC and Seattle this month. On the other hand LAFC have taken seven points from a possible nine in recent weeks and did managed to keep two clean sheets in their last three games. However Toronto have managed to score in nine consecutive matches in the MLS , so Giovinco on recent form should be a good choice.
Bradley Wright-Phillips / NYRB / $9.9 Million / vs Houston (H), Montreal (A)
The forward was slightly disappointing in terms of points return last round , after scoring against rivals . BWP failed to follow up his good performance against NYCFC , when he only earned one point against DC.
It’s another busy round for the Redbulls and BWP this week , as they face a tough away day at Montreal .
However before their away trip , NYRB face Houston at home. The good news for BWP is the Dynamos have not kept a clean sheet in seven games, and they haven’t won a game since the beginning of July, eight games ago. Montreal , like Houston seem to be struggling to keep the ball out of their net , the last time the Canadian side kept a clean sheet was July 15 against San Jose . Two goals in his last five games is nothing to shout home about for BWP , but two games against sides who seem to be struggling defensibly is a good match up.
Diego Valeri / Portland / $13.0 Million / vs Toronto (H), New England (A)
Diego Valeri has gone from red hot to frozen in recent weeks . A points tally of two , two and six in his last three games is a shocking return for a high value player in your squad. However he did average 15 points in the two previous games before his dip in form.
Portland face New England and Toronto this round and it maybe a perfect opportunity for the midfielder to end his goal and assist drought.
Toronto have conceded five goals in their last three games and have only won one of their last four league games. While New England have lost back to back games heading in to this. Portland’s form is poor at the moment which may effect Valeri’s influence and points return. But both games are winnable on paper and Valeri has the class to make things happen.
Wayne Rooney / DC United / $10.8 Million / vs Philadelphia, Atlanta (H)
The Englishman hasn’t scored or assisted a goal in his last two games, so he is surely due an upturn in form ? Rooney did managed three goals and two assists prior to his recent drought.
This round Rooney and DC face the Union, who’s from has taken a steep incline recently, three wins on the trot has seen them close the gap on fourth place Columbus and they have kept back to back clean sheets in their last two games.
The games unfortunately don’t get easier for DC , they face Atlanta , who are unbeaten in seven. However every opposition has manage to score against Atlanta in the last six games . So they maybe a possible weakness, Rooney and DC can exploit.
