Round 29 in the MLS gets underway tonight, So I have taken a look at the best options to make your Fantasy captain this week. Picking the right captain this week , could see you claw back points on the leaders of your league , or even extend the gap at the top. Here’s my top four picks for this week.
Carlos Darwin Quintero / Minnesota / $12.5 Million / vs DC and RSL (A)
Carlos Darwin Quintero should be fit and ready for Minnesota’s double game week this round. The forward had been in great form before he picked up a calf injury last month, he scored four goals in his last six matches and even managed to lay on eight assists for his teammates. Minnesota’s first test of the week comes in the form of an away trip to the Capital. DC have stumbled of late after an impressive run of results last month. However a draw against NYCFC last round and a win against Atlanta in round 27 is something for DC to build on. While Minnesota will be hoping Quintero can give them a boost , as Minnesota are without a win in five games. So United will not be looking forward to facing RSL who put six past the Galaxy in a 6-2 win last week. If Quintero can bring the form he showed before his injury then he should be a great choice , but on the other hand he may need time to get back up to match fitness and may not play the 180 minutes on offer.
Wayne Rooney / DC United / $11.6 Million / vs Minnesota and NYRB (H)
DC are a different team than we saw in the spring. A win against Atlanta and a draw against NYCFC in recent weeks has helped them continue their good run. Though United were struggling a little before they managed to get the win over Atlanta in round 27. While Rooney’s has struggled in front of goal of late he has only netted once in in his last five games.
DC face Minnesota at home and should be targeting three points against a side who haven’t won in five games. However a tougher test in their second game against top of the table NYRB is not an easy game for any side. The Redbulls did lose to Montreal 3-0 in their last away game. So Rooney and DC should take some encouragement form this.
Luciano Acosta / DC United / $11.0 Million / vs Minnesota and NYRB (H)
The second DC player this week to make the list is Luciano Acosta. Who is a viable captain option this round. The midfielder has been a little hit and miss in recent weeks , fantasy scores of three, three and two in his last four matches are poor from a player that will set you back north of $10 million most weeks. However Acosta did managed two goals last round , which helped in reach double figures for only the fifth time his year though.
This week DC have a winnable game against Minnesota who have conceded 12 goals in their last four games. A tough test against the Redbulls is DC’s second game this round , however it may just be a good time to play NYRB who may not be at 100% this week.
Miguel Ibarra / Minnesota / $7.5 Million / vs DC and RSL (A) (Wildcard)
One assist and no goals in his last five games doesn’t make Miguel Ibarra the most appealing captain choice this week, but there is merit in giving him the captain arm band this round. Ibarra is only averaging 0.88 less points a round than Acosta , and is $3.5 million less. So if you want to take full advantage of Minnesota playing twice this week and you need to save some cash than Ibarra may be worth taking a look at . While RSL will be a tougher test for United , RSL have only kept one clean sheet in their last six games. So maybe a weakness Minnesota can take advantage of.
