2018 Round 34 Captain’s conundrum

Round 34 in the MLS gets underway today, So I have taken a look at the best options to make your Fantasy captain this week. Picking the right captain this week , could see you claw back points on the leaders of your league , or even extend the gap at the top. Here’s my top picks for this week.

Luciano Acosta / DC United $13 Million / vs Toronto and NYC (H)

A 1-0 win over FC Dallas in round 34 saw DC stretch their unbeaten run to seven games. It seems DC have found top gear at the most important time of the season, United have won their last three games but still need to continue their good run into round 34 to cement a play-off spot. While Luciano Acosta has been low key in regard to points returned, the midfielder has had no assists or goals in his last two matches and has only returned more than 13 points once in his last 11 games.

However, it’s a double game week for DC and Acosta in round 34. Their first match is against Toronto who are just playing out the season with nothing to aim for in terms of play offs and post season achievements. Toronto have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last 10 matches, their last shut out came way back in July.

Their second match is against NYC who will be the fresher of the two sides, as its only one match for the blues this round. A tougher match for DC on paper, but it’s hard to imagine NYC will be at 100 per cent. They might just be cruising through their last two games of the regular season. A good match up for Acosta against sides who are not really playing for much.

Wayne Rooney / DC United / $13.3 Million / vs Toronto and NYC (H)

Wayne Rooney failed to score in round 33 against FC Dallas, however he did net five goals in his previous three games for DC. Rooney is a good captain choice this round for all the same reasons Acosta is. However, Rooney has been there, done it and got the T-Shirt. He is a Premier League winner and Champions League winner. Clinching play-off spots and winning in the Play-off’s is why Rooney was brought in to DC.

Nine goals in 17 appearances for DC isn’t bad going for a Player who is still settling in to the league. Rooney is a winner and scoring goals is what he does. So, two good match ups against teams not really playing for anything is a good spot for the Englishman.

 Kei Kamara / Vancouver / $11.5 Million / vs SKC (H) and LAFC (A)

It’s all or nothing for Vancouver in their race for a play-off spot this round. Their first match against SKC will be the one the Whitecaps will be targeting. SKC haven’t won any of their last three games, and it looks their best chance of picking up a win, with LAFC away in their second match of round 34.

However, SKC will look at this game thinking they need something from the game, Sporting KC’s next two games are against FC Dallas and LAFC. So, Vancouver is their best chance of getting any points on paper in the last few weeks of the season. Three goals in his last five matches for Kamara, saw his tally for the season rise to 14 goals. While Kamara has had easier match ups than playing two of the top three teams back to back, the game plan should be pretty simple for Vancouver , find a way to win.

Cristian Roldan / Seattle / $10 Million / vs Orlando and Houston (A) Wildcard

This week’s wildcard is Cristian Roldan. He managed to find the back of the net against Houston in round 33, which ended his goal scoring drought of six games. He also picked up an assist against the Dynamos returning 13 points which is his highest points total of the year. It may be a sign Roldan is hitting top form at the business end of the season and two good match ups, albeit away from home. may be a good opportunity for Roldan to continue his good form.
