Round 9 in the MLS is here, So I have taken a look at the best options to make your Fantasy captain this week. Picking the right captain this week , could see you claw back points on the leaders of your league , or even extend the gap at the top. Here’s my top four picks for this week.
Miguel Almiron / Atlanta / $12.8 Million / vs Montreal
The attacking midfielder is the stand out option this week . Miguel Almiron has hit double figures in the last three round of MLS fantasy soccer , picking up 20 , 10 and then 14 points last week against LA Galaxy.
In round 9 Almiron and Atlanta face a Montreal side , who come in to the game on the back of a three game losing streak . The impact have conceded 12 goals in their last three games and if there was a team in the league that you would want to avoid playing right now it would be Atlanta, unbeaten in 6 games and they have managed to net seven goals in their last 2 home games.
Carlos Vela / LAFC / $12.5 Million / vs Seattle
Carlos Vela earned fantasy owners 14 points last week , in LAFC victory over the Impact. Vela managed one goal and assist in the 5-3 win in week 8. This weekend is a special occasion for Vela and the LAFC fans as their game against the Sounders will be their first home game of the season . So Vela will be hoping to put on a good display in their stadium opener.
This fixture is a repeat of the opening day match , which saw LAFC win 1-0 in their first MLS game in the clubs history. Vela managed an assist in that game and will be hoping to put in another big performance against the Sounders in round 9.
Josef Martinez / Atlanta / $11 Million / vs Montreal
Josef Martinez has gone a little under the radar this week , as everyone seems to be backing Miguel Almiron to be the big fantasy points scorer this week for Atlanta . However Martinez has scored 2 goals in his last 3 games .
This week Atlanta have a favourable match up against a Impact side who have been poor of late. Montreal head into week 9 of the back of a 5-3 defeat to LAFC, bringing their losing streak to 3 games. Atlanta are great at home and have scored 7 goals in their last 2 home games , so it would be no surprise if Martinez grabbed a couple of goals and Atlanta won by 4 plus goals.
Johnny Russell/ SKC / $9.3 Million / New England Revolution – Wildcard
Johnny Russell’s performances have steadily improved over recent weeks . The winger seems to have settled well into the league and in to SKC’s team. Russell really showed his class in round 8 grabbing himself a hat trick against Vancouver Whitecaps ,in a stand out performance from the SKC man.
New England Revolution did lose their last home game and will need to be strong defensively against a SKC who have scored 8 goals in their last 2 games. IF SKC do continue their impressive scoring run , then expect Russell to be heavily involved in the attacking play.
