Round 18’s captain rankings are here. A double game week for LAFC means that Vela is on the top of the charts again. But who are the contenders challenging him for the #1 spot this time?
1) Carlos Vela
Vela failed to make an impact in the loss against Colorado Rapids where he only managed to rack up 3 points. It was the first time in 5 games that he got single digit points. A match against SKC who are still plagued with an injury crisis and Vancouver Whitecaps who handed LAFC their first loss, Vela will be looking to bring his season back on track. He is a very safe captain this week and also possesses the highest potential amongst all players in this list.
2) Maxi Moralez
Moralez is a must have almost every time he plays at home and this week is no exception when he plays twice. The Sounders and the Timbers seem like formidable opponents on paper but Sounders are missing key players due to international duty and Timbers are yet to figure out their woeful away form. Maxi Moralez is giving Vela a run for his money this week and provides an interesting captain choice for those who aren’t completely sold on Vela.
3) Eduard Atuesta
Atuesta has had such a stellar season so far and his points in previous games speak for themselves. He has scored above 5 points in 11 consecutive games and is also chipping away with goals and assists regularly. Not as consistent with his ceiling as you would like your captain to be, he is still a super safe option and provides a great combo of high floor + high ceiling.
4) Josef Martinez
Martinez is back from international duty and he will feel hard done coming off the bench for Venezuela in the last 3 games before eventually being knocked out by Argentina in Copa America. His return will provide a huge boost to the team since they have been playing without a decent striker. Chicago Fire is yet to address their defensive problems and Martinez is lethal at home. This is a great opportunity for the team to get some of their old form back and Martinez will be hungry for goals.
5) Latif Blessing
Blessing has been a workhorse for LAFC and is always trying to help the team in whichever way he can may it be defensively, creating goals, scoring goals, etc. He has 2 goals in his last 3 games and is also consistently generating bonus points to go with. At the price of $10.0, I expect many players to give him a miss but he still remains a very tempting option this week.
