Round 15 Captain Picks
With Carlos Gil out (for several weeks, reportedly) and a double game week kicking off tonight, the choice for who wears the armband is bigger than ever this week. Here are a few of top choices:
Vela / LAFC / $10.4m / vs Sporting Kansas City & away vs San Jose
A goal or assist in his last 6 games. Consistent (but moderate) bonus point production. A double game week against two defenses who consistently allow goals. With the other Carlos (Gil) out with a sports hernia, Vela is the easiest swap for captain this week. LAFC has not quite returned to the sparky offense of old, but they are scoring goals and Vela is involved. With one home and one away game against two relatively leaky defenses, Vela is a good shout for captain this week.
Nani / Orlando / $10.7m / vs Inter Miami CF & away vs FC Cincinnati
Reigning Player of the Week (a goal and assist last week vs Atlanta) Nani is another viable option for captain this week. While Nani was rested away at NYCFC the previous week, Nani was back in full force last weekend. The Portugese star has been bang or bust a lot this season, but the matchups he has this week make him probably a must-own at minimum. Inter Miami and Cinicinnati are two of the statistically worst defenses in the league, leaving the door wide open for Nani to dominate.
Zelarayan / Columbus / $9.8m / vs DC United & Atlanta United
Another bang or bust midfielder, the Columbus playmaker has to be in contention for captain this week with two home games and Gyasi Zardes back in the fold after returning from the Gold Cup. When goals have come for Columbus, Zela has (almost single handedly) been pulling the strings. DC United have been efficient defensively and Atlanta United will be returning many of their key defensive figures this week. Still, if anyone is going to break through those backlines the odds are it will be Zelarayan.
