Round 10 Captain Picks
As the allure of Round 9’s DGW fades, Round 10 begins this Thursday with all teams on single games and a plethora of options for the armband.
Carlos Gil / New England / $13.5m / at The Crew
While I don’t make it a habit to captain players on an away game, Gil might be the exception this week. In Round 9 the Spanish playmaker recorded his highest (18 pts) and lowest (4 pts) score of the season, which makes it hard to feel overly confident or discouraged by throwing the armband on Gil. The last time Gil got below double digits was at home vs Columbus (9 pts) in Round 5, but with 8 assists in the last 5 games and bonus point production staying consistent, it’s hard not to make Gil a top contender. While I still insist we aren’t at “Always Captain Gil” just yet, the Spanish midfielder is sure making a case for it.
Fragapane / Minnesota / $9.7m / vs San Jose
The Argentine playmaker has certainly hit the ground running since landing in Minnesota. Logging two goals and two assists in the last three games, Franco Fragapane seems like the real deal. While having played only two rounds this season might not be enough to consider Fragapane a contender for the armband, San Jose has conceded 12 goals in the past 5 games. If Fragapane isn’t slapped with a suspension for alleged racial abuse (vs Portland in Round 9), he should be in contention for captainship.
Chicharito / LA Galaxy / $9.7m / vs Sporting Kansas City
While the LA striker is boom or bust with point production, he scored three goals this past week. Playing at home against a Sporting Kansas City defense that has only kept one clean sheet all season (at home vs Vancouver), Chicharito might be due to continue his goal scoring streak. With who should wear the armband somewhat contentious this week, Chicharito may be a good differential choice.
