Welcome back! Fantasy MLS captain rankings for round 5 are here after a quickfire game week. The second DGW of the season has come around and it’s time to use all the knowledge and tips you might’ve come up with to make most of the new DGW rule. Here are my captaincy rankings for the week:
1) Alejandro Pozuelo (Vs Montreal Impact, @Vancouver Whitecaps)
The easiest recommendation for captaincy this week, he has a goal or an assist at least in the last 2 games he has played Vs this week’s opposition. If that wasn’t convincing enough, he has the highest expected assists (xA) and combined expected goals (xG) + expected assists (xA) this season.
2) Diego Rossi (Vs San Jose Earthquakes, @Los Angeles Galaxy)
Rossi has the highest xG in the league slightly edging out Raul Ruidiaz and Gyazi Zardes. He faces SJE this week who have conceded 8 goals in their last 3 games so I believe it could be a test for his ceiling especially with the new DGW rule favouring players like him.
3) Nicolas Lodeiro (@Real Salt Lake, Vs Portland Timbers)
RSL gave up 15 shots last week while conceding 4 and attacking midfielders such as Diego Valeri and Sebastian Blanco had great games. On the other hand, POR gave up 29 shots while conceding 4 and If the same trend is to follow, I believe Lodeiro will have a great DGW.
4) Gustavo Bou (@New York City FC, Vs Chicago Fire)
He offers a really safe captain choice with his floor and a good chance to score Vs NYCFC and CHI who have underperformed so far this season. He is 2nd this season for xA and xG + xA.
5) Darwin Quintero (Vs Minnesota United FC, Vs Sporting Kansas City)
There will be questions regarding his game time but there is a possibility that he starts both games after coming off a bye week. Quintero can either get you 2 points or 20 but he got favourable fixtures this week at home against 2 teams struggling defensively.
