Round 3 in the MLS gets underway tomorrow, So I have taken a look at the best options to make your Fantasy captain this week. Picking the right captain this week , could see you claw back points on the leaders of your league , or even extend the gap at the top. Here’s my top picks for this week.
Wayne Rooney / DC United / $10.5 Million / F / vs RSL
The Englishman returned just two points in the second week of the season. However DC United remained unbeaten after earning a draw away at NYCFC in round two. Rooney has one assist this season and has averaged 3.5 fantasy points.
The low return has seen his priced reduced by $500k since the start of the season. Which seems good value at home to Real Salt Lake in round three. RSL have managed to pick up four points from their opening two games. However their trip to the capital marks the start of a difficult month with games against FC Dallas , Seattle and LAFC. So if DC put in a similar performance to the one against Atlanta , Rooney is well worth consider as your captain.
Carlos Vela / LAFC / $11.3 Million / F / vs NYCFC
One goal and two assists against the Timbers in round two saw him return 16 fantasy points. LAFC have scored six goals in their opening two matches this season, showing their attacking ability. While opponents NYCFC haven’t had the same fast start , drawing their opening two matches.
LAFC haven’t had the easiest set of games facing the Timbers and SKC , so far . So an away trip to NYCFC shouldn’t faze them. While LAFC’s approach should not alter , so there is no reason why Vela’s form can not continue away from home.
Luciano Acosta / DC United / $11.4 Million / M / vs RSL
One goal and one assist in DC’s opening game of the season against Atlanta saw him return 15 fantasy points. DC have over the last 8 months , have proved their quality to compete with the best in the league. While it’s not just DC who have shown their quality , Acosta had been close to $25 Million to PSG before the season started. So if you don’t mind the $11.4 million price tag ,up $900k since the round one. Then Acosta is well worth considering as making your captain in round three.
Nicolás Lodeiro / Seattle / $11.8 Million / M / vs Chicago
It wouldn’t be a complete breakdown of the captain options if Nicolas Lodeiro wasn’t included. Three weeks in and Lodeiro has been a top four option every week. However after a excellent round one returning 14 points , he disappointed with a four point round last week. So if you believe Lodiero can continue to have a decent fantasy return on the road then the forward has the quality to be worth considering.
