2019 Round 20 Captain’s Conundrum

Round 20’s captain rankings are here. This is a massive double game week which will shape the rest of the season and there are a lot of good attackers who’re worthy of your captain’s armband this week.

1) Alejandro Pozuelo

Pozuelo is the obvious captain choice with two fantastic home games and is a good bet for 120+ minutes this week. The Red Bulls have conceded 10 goals in their last 3 away games and Houston Dynamo have lost their last 7 away games in a row. Couple this with the fact that Pozuelo has had double-digit scores in his last 4 away games and you are looking at a big DGW score in the making.

2) Josef Martinez

The king is back and with two games on home turf to have a go at. He has 3 goals in his last 2 games and I believe that he is one of the players who could possibly beat Pozuelo’s tally this week. Even though his ceiling is incredibly high, his floor isn’t so it’s a big risk to captain Martinez when you have other equally good or even better options.

3) Carles Gil

Gil is a great captain pick but comes with a catch. He is currently on suspension watch due to the accumulation of yellow cards and an additional yellow will suspend him for the match against Cincinnati. If you are willing to bet on him avoiding a suspension, he plays the worst team in the eastern as well as the western conference in the same week. The arrival of DP striker Bou should also help with his production.

4) Nico Gaitan

Gaitan must’ve missed 2 penalties in the last match but that doesn’t change the fact that he is an important part of the Chicago Fire offense. His output this week will mostly depend on how he performs against Columbus Crew. They haven’t won in the last 8 games and are currently on a 5 game losing streak. They might start the inexperienced duo of Crognale and Keita at the back so it’s another opportunity for Gaitan to have a big game. Philadelphia Union has been unpredictable in the past few games so that match could go anywhere but it’s just bonus points if Gaitan does feature in the match.

5) Brian Fernandez

Fernandez does not have much to show for his past two games but could easily have a big score this week. He appeals to me as a big game player so it’s going to be interesting to see how many points he is able to score this week. The only concern will be that he isn’t guaranteed to start in both games. This spot could’ve been taken by Diego Valeri who could possibly start in both the games this week.
