Week 1 is always tough when you are picking a captain, there is just not enough information to go on. But there are a few things that help. Is the team playing at home? Are there any key injuries (on either team)? Who had a good Preseason? Did Andrew Wiebe see his shadow this morning? All of these things help. Here are my top 3 choices:

1) Matt Hedges: Dallas may have ended poorly last season, but they have had an encouraging preseason and started strong last year. I’m hoping that they will be able to do the same against a Montreal side that will be missing two key strikers and a defender. This seems like the best clean sheet chance to me and Hedges has good CBI generation and always has a chance for a goal on a set piece.

2) Pa-Modou Kah: Portland had a defense that was impressive last season, at home and away, with its wall of Gambia. While the wall has ben broken, Kah is still around and he’s a beast when it comes to generating CBIs and bonus points. Portland’s chance to get a clean sheet might not look as promising as Dallas’ looks, but I believe it is quite possible.

3) Brad Davis: I went back and forth about this third pick a lot. Finally, after some Live Chat discussion, I settled on Brad Davis. New England will be without their first choice right defender and that should make life easier for Brad Davis. Combine that with a good preseason and he becomes one of the more dangerous attackers at the start of this season.

4) Higuain: Usually my 4th pick is a differential, but since I don’t really have enough data for that in Round 1, I’m just going with a top 4. The reason I value Higuain over other forwards is that I love his bonus point generation and I think that DC has a defense that columbus could score on. This gives him an advantage over players like Keane or Magee.
