MLS Fantasy Round 17 Review (Part 1)

Philadelphia Union 1 vs. Seattle Sounders 0

Highlights

CJ Sapong continued his fine run of form as the Sounders continued to feel the effects of the missing 3 DPs. The Sounders defense still looked strong and the offense even seemed to enjoy some good run of play, but the offensive firepower was just lacking. As for the Union, you have to think they should’ve done better against such an understaffed Sounders team.

Fantasy Standouts/Letdowns

  • CJ Sapong is the obvious hot hand after this game, but less obvious was the Sounders defense as Frei stopped a PK to keep the Sounders in the game early on and allow them to put the Union on edge.

New York Red Bulls 1 vs. Real Salt Lake 0

Highlights

After a worrying run of form for the Red Bulls they bounced back. Mike Grella helped the Red Bulls go up early and then maintain that lead for the rest of the match. They did get some help as RSL had an early red to their playmaker Javier Morales and another red to Demar Phillips later on. A rough match for RSL and some worrying form that could spark panic amongst the fans, especially with their playmaker out for the next match.

Fantasy Standouts/Letdowns

  • Javier Morales really let down some fantasy owners with his red card, especially with one more game to go. Meanwhile the Red Bulls defense held up strong, fortified by the return of Matt Miazga.

Columbus Crew 2 vs. New England Revolution 1

Highlights

The Revs attacked looked to be revived by Lee Nguyen in the 4th minute, as the Revs offensive ace saw his goal scoring drought come to an end. Kei Kamara would have something to say as he went on to score a brace and the Revs were unable to do anything about it. Apart from Kamara and Nguyen, Finlay continued to make his case for USMNT, your fantasy team, or any national team really, as he assisted yet again to put him amongst the assisting leaders in MLS.

Fantasy Standouts/Letdowns

  • Kei Kamara is hot and you better not forget it, while Lee Nguyen is making his case for a return to 2014 form. Oh and Finlay can’t stop assisting.

Orlando City SC 2 vs. Colorado Rapids 0

Highlights

Colorado’s struggles continue as Orlando City SC is making the case that they aren’t a bust of an expansion team. Kaka and Larin led the team in the second half to bring a W to Orlando. The Rapids, however, still need to find the time to increase the on-field chemistry or the Rapids will most certainly miss out on the playoffs.

Fantasy Standouts/Letdowns

  • Kaka and Larin like I said. These two guys are the offense and as far as cheap defense goes, Ramos and Boden are always good attacking outside backs to look too.

Toronto FC 3 vs. Montreal Impact 1

Highlights

This game is what dreams are made of for Toronto FC fans. All 3 DPs scored and they knocked off their fellow country men in the Montreal Impact. Piatti and the Impact offense failed to get going and the only person to get on the scoresheet was their outside back Oyongo. Now Montreal has a ton of games in hand so there’s not much to worry about, but there is a lot to get excited about for Toronto FC even with Bradley and Altidore going off to the Gold Cup.

Fantasy Standouts/Letdowns

  • Giovinco, Giovinco, Giovinco. That’s my only real recommendation although, Toia and Oyongo have been doing ok on the wings for the Impact. Also Zavaleta is there to stay in the Toronto FC backline and has shown his prowess to get bonus points.

DC United 1 vs. Chicago Fire 0

Highlights

The game was still until the man wearing number 30 above unleashed a sensational volley in the 73rd minute. The Fire have been unable to get the attack going without Maloney or Accam and it’s painfully obvious. Apart from DC United’s Doyle goal, DC United still has work to do. They can’t win a cup if they don’t have someone who can step up consistently and it especially hurts our fantasy teams.

Fantasy Standouts/Letdowns

  • Neither team has anyone in particular who stood out, however, Joevin Jones has been playing out of his normal left back position in midfield and could be dangerous down the line when the attack comes back alive.

That’s the breakdown for the first half of Round 10. What do you think? Did any players jump out at you who you think deserve to be highlighted?
